Portland's St Georges Centre

 The St Georges centre..in Reforne.

I think this was a school at one time, it now has several classes, hobby style classes, host jumble sales among other activities.

I can remember this being revamped 15 to 20 years ago, as I grew up (aged 10 onwards) opposite the centre. A lovely row of arches on this building, they made good post for dribbling a football round when you are a football mad teenager!

This along with the YMCA building next to it being revamped made a big difference to Reforne and the area looked better for it.

St Georges Church is situated just at the top of Reforne.

My Gran is 90 and went to school there so lots of stories to tell lol. I agree, it's much better now it's had a face lift.

The commenting here, it's odd, it shows a preview even if you click post comment.. not sure why other than to give you an option to check the comment before posting...the fact it does that anyway means the preview button is more or less a waste of time.

No idea what I can do about it as that's the way it's set up.

It is a building with many uses, playgroup, fitness class centre, painting and photographic exhibitions, children's parties, various types of fair (Christmas or otherwise) and Graeme and Kerrie had their Wedding Reception in the smaller hall next door back in 1995. The Silver Threads group used to hold their Thursday afternoon meetings in their and I believe it is still used for Bingo. So, yes it is good to see yet another of Portland's wonderful old buildings being put to good use and not out to pasture or conversion into flats etc. Oh, and Anonymous - write down some of those stories you're old gran has, never know when you will want to reflect back on them. I have to rely on my memory and not everything comes out of the recesses of my mind immediately as I age. Nice blog Rob - keep them coming x

The main reason it's set up that way is to stop the spammers with "auto-bots"... leaving crappy comments with links everywhere.

It is a shame we have to combat them, else they run riot.

I knew there were a few classes going on here but never realised it was many, great to know, thanks Sylv.

I remember dressing up as children from long ago to help save this building and people bought bricks to help keep it going. I must have been about 9 or 10 so around 1983 and I have a clipping somewhere of us jumping rope in the courtyard.
